Dr. Paul Hungler (Assistant Professor) and David Poirier (Adjunct Lecturer and Laboratory Coordinator) are two of four recipients of this year’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Teaching Awards. They both received the award for Innovation in Teaching.
The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Innovation in Teaching Award recognizes faculty members who innovate in at least one of the following ways:
- Supports student success by using innovative teaching methods
- Enhances the traditional student learning experience
- Excites students to learn, participate and achieve
Before joining Queen’s in 2017, Dr. Paul Hungler was one of the leads in the Canadian Armed Forces for Learning Technologies and the application of Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) for training. He is applying this expertise in the hope that VR/AR can similarly revolutionize the way future generations of engineers are educated. Paul’s teaching philosophy is focused on providing students with experiential learning opportunities which can enhance their understanding and engineering competencies. Paul has taught a variety of courses in Chemical Engineering and in the Faculty’s Engineering Design spine including ChemEtronics, Engineering Design and Practice I & II, and Engineering Leadership. Additionally, Paul has led the development of an enhanced Queen’s Master of Engineering Program and was involved in the development of several graduate level professional practice courses.
Utilizing years of engineering research and process investigation experience, David Poirier has made 15 years of vital contributions to the development and renewal of the undergraduate engineering laboratories in the Department of Chemical Engineering. His efforts have resulted in the introduction of more than $400K in new laboratory systems and the development of a new engineering laboratory course dedicated to the pedagogical needs of 4th year Engineering Chemistry students. His teaching philosophy and the comprehensive approach required in performing the engineering laboratory projects have greatly enhanced learning outcomes for all the department’s undergraduate engineering laboratory courses.
